Designing a map experience for Nepal

Baato Maps is a localized navigation product built to help people find their way through Nepal with useful maps, places, routes, and public transport information.

It is designed for people moving through familiar neighborhoods and unfamiliar cities alike — with a focus on local context, clear interactions, and dependable access to information.

I led product design across the mobile and web experiences, from understanding user needs and shaping flows to UI, prototyping, testing, and design systems.

Making maps feel local

  • Navigation suited to Nepal’s context
  • Easier discovery and interaction with places
  • Clearer, more accessible map experiences

Understanding before designing

I used research, user feedback, and usability testing to understand friction points and shape the experience before moving into detailed UI.

Mobile

A localized mobile experience designed for exploring places, finding routes, navigating Nepal, and accessing essential map information on the go.

Web

A web experience that brings Baato's maps, places, and navigation tools to a larger screen, making exploration and route planning easier.

Building consistency

Typography, colors, components, map elements, icons, and key UI patterns formed a shared foundation for the product.

Design → test → refine

I tested early directions, listened for friction, and refined the experience through focused iterations.

What the work achieved

Baato Maps grew into a product used by 10K+ users, and design improvements reduced interaction friction and created a more consistent experience across the product.

What I took away

Designing Baato Maps taught me that good product design is often about understanding the local context first. Working across both mobile and web also taught me to maintain a consistent experience while adapting interactions to each platform.
